The Memorandum

Vaclav Havel's Memorandum is an absurdest play critiquing the inanity of an overly prescriptive, bureaucratic system that robs people of their very identity. As it was written in the 1960s, Joel decided to set the production in that era. I scoured local thrift stores looking for vintage clothing and outfitted the entire cast. In terms of the set, the play is concentrated in three areas, two offices and a classroom. We built the offices back to back with two functioning doorways inserted into the shared wall. The doorways allowed for movement and a sense of a larger space. The entire structure was built on a rotating platform, akin to a giant Lazy Susan. The set could then be spun around to reveal the appropriate classroom for the scene.
